Zur weiteren Steigerung der Sicherheit im Windhoek erhöht die Stadtpolizei die Präsenz ihrer Fahrradstaffel. Die Derzeit vier Fahrradpolizisten werden durch 13 weitere ergänzt. Neun von ihnen sollen in Katutura, vier im Stadtzentrum eingesetzt werden. Die Polizisten auf dem Fahrrad hätten sich vor allem bei Handtaschendiebstählen bewehrt, da sie die zu Fuß flüchtenden Diebe meist schnell stellen könnten. Die Fahrräder für die Staffel wurden von einer großen namibischen Bank gespendet.
Der Staat investiert weiter in die Gesundheit der Namibier. So hat das Gesundheitsministerium für Juli die Inbetriebnahme von 36 Dialyse-Apparaten in Aussicht gestellt. Diese werden beim Windhoeker Zentralkrankenhaus, im Staatskrankenhaus Oshakati sowie im Staatskrankenhaus Rundu platziert. Es handelt sich um die ersten Apparate zur Blutreinigung in staatlichen Krankenhäusern im Land. Bisher mussten Patienten in private Einrichtungen gehen. – Im kommenden Jahr sollen weitere Dialysegeräte in den Staatskrankenhäusern in Keetmanshoop, Walvis Bay und Katima Mulilo stationiert werden.
Südafrika trauert um Ahmed Kathrada: Der Anti-Apartheid-Kämpfer ist im Alter von 87 Jahren in einem Krankenhaus in Johannesburg gestorben. Kathrada hatte sich einer Hirnoperation unterzogen, bei der es Komplikationen gab. Er war Weggefährte und Mithäftling des früheren südafrikanischen Präsidenten Nelson Mandela. Beide wurden 1964 im sog. Rivonia-Prozess verurteilt. Das Verfahren sorgte weltweit für Aufmerksamkeit und warf ein Schlaglicht auf das brutale Rechtssystem unter dem Apartheid-Regime.
Schauspielerin Christine Kaufmann ist im Alter von 72 Jahren in einer Münchener Klinik gestorben. Sie litt an Leukämie war und zuletzt ins Koma gefallen. Die Ex-Frau von Hollywood-Star Tony Curtis stand von Kindertagen an im Rampenlicht. Kaufmann drehte nicht nur zahlreiche Filme und stand auf der Bühne, sie war auch als Autorin aktiv.
